Cloud staffing: hire cloud engineers vetted by a practitioner

Conntal places cloud engineers who understand what their architecture costs and how it fails, not just how to provision it. Every candidate is screened by an Ace8 or AceMQ practitioner on a real AWS, Azure or Google Cloud scenario before you see them. Available on contract, contract-to-hire or direct hire, onshore, nearshore or offshore.

Indicative rate: from $80/hr nearshore or offshore and $120/hr onshore. See what moves it.

Rates

What a contract cloud engineer costs

Senior contract cloud engineer rates start at $80/hr nearshore or offshore and $120/hr onshore. These are indicative from-rates, last reviewed 31 October 2026.

Indicative senior contract from-rates for cloud engineers, by location model, USD per hour
Location modelFrom (USD per hour)Where engineers are based
OnshoreHighest rate$120/hrUS-based, on client time zones, cleared where the engagement requires it.
NearshoreOur default recommendation$80/hrLatin America and Canada, four hours or less of overlap loss, same working day.
OffshoreLowest rate$80/hrEurope, India and South East Asia.

What moves the number

  • Platform scarcity. The fewer engineers who have run Cloud engineer in production, the higher the rate.
  • Seniority. The figures are for senior engineers; staff and principal levels cost more.
  • Clearance and residency. Cleared or on-site work narrows the pool and sits in the onshore column.
  • Term. Length, hours and the engagement model change the rate; contract-to-hire and direct placement are priced differently.

Indicative from-rates for senior contract engineers, USD per hour. The final rate depends on platform scarcity, seniority, clearance and term.

Conntal Vetting Standard

Scenario put to the candidate

An AWS account's bill jumps by a large share the month after a team moved its services into private subnets. Nothing else changed. Where do you look?

Vetted by

Platform engineering lead · Ace8

A senior answer contains

  • Goes to Cost Explorer by usage type before guessing, and expects to find NAT gateway data-processing charges.
  • Explains that traffic from private subnets to S3 or DynamoDB now flows through the NAT gateway and is billed per gigabyte.
  • Proposes gateway VPC endpoints for S3 and DynamoDB, which take that traffic off the NAT gateway.
  • Checks for new cross-Availability-Zone traffic introduced by the move, and uses VPC Flow Logs to confirm the source.

Where a mid answer stops

  • Assumes compute grew and starts rightsizing instances.
  • Proposes moving the services back to public subnets.
  • Cannot say how NAT gateway charges are calculated.

Engagement

Ways to hire cloud engineers

Platform work usually starts with a defined piece of change and becomes ongoing ownership, which is why most cloud engineers engagements begin on contract. All three models are available, in any location model.

01

Contract

A vetted engineer embedded in your team for a defined term.

Hourly, billed against an approved SOW. Most common for migrations, upgrades and capacity surges where the work has an end date.

Contract staffing
02

Contract-to-hire

Work together first, convert when it is obviously working.

A defined conversion window and a pre-agreed fee, so the decision to hire is a business decision rather than a negotiation.

Contract-to-hire staffing
03

Direct placement

A permanent hire, screened to the same standard.

One-time fee against first-year base. Used where the role is a long-term platform owner rather than project capacity.

Direct placement staffing

Not a fit if

When to look elsewhere for cloud engineers

We are the wrong choice if any of these describe your role, and we would rather say so on the first call.

  • You need a certification holder with no production operations behind it.
  • You want your cloud estate run for you as a service; that is Ace8's work, not a placement.
  • The role is pre-sales or solution selling rather than engineering.

How it works

How hiring cloud engineers through Conntal works

  1. 01

    Scope

    A practitioner scopes the role

An engineer who runs this technology reads your brief and tells you what is missing from it. Most briefs we receive ask for the wrong seniority or the wrong title.
  2. 02

    Screen

    We screen, then shortlist

Sourcing is ours; the technical decision belongs to the vetting practitioner. You only see candidates who passed the scenario on this page.
  3. 03

    Start

    Start, convert or replace

Contract, contract-to-hire or direct. If the fit is wrong we say so first and replace rather than defend the placement.

FAQ

Cloud engineers: what buyers ask

Something not covered here? Send the requirement and a practitioner answers it, not a sales queue.

How much does a contract cloud engineer cost per hour?

Indicative senior contract from-rates are $80/hr nearshore or offshore and $120/hr onshore (USD, reviewed 31 October 2026). The final rate depends on platform scarcity, seniority, clearance and term. Contract-to-hire and direct placement are priced differently, and the delivery models page sets out how.

How fast can a cloud engineer start?

We do not promise a start date before we have seen the brief. A practitioner reads it, usually within one business day, and tells you whether we can staff it. Timing after that depends on the stack, the seniority and the location model.

Do you staff engineers for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud?

Yes. The screen is run against the cloud you operate, and multi-cloud roles are screened on each cloud separately rather than assuming one implies the other.

What is the difference between a cloud engineer and a DevOps engineer?

A cloud engineer usually owns the cloud foundation: accounts, networking, identity, managed services and cost. A DevOps engineer usually owns the delivery path onto it. Many roles combine both.

Can your cloud engineers work with managed messaging services?

Yes. AceMQ supports Amazon SQS, Azure Service Bus and Google Pub/Sub for enterprise clients, so candidates are screened on how those services behave under load, not just how to create them.

Do you place cloud engineers for cost-reduction work?

Yes. Cost remediation is a common bounded contract, and the screen above is built around it.

Who runs the technical screen for cloud engineers?

The screen is owned by the Platform engineering lead at Ace8. It is a production scenario, and the senior and mid answers are published on this page so you can judge the bar before you engage us.

Can we convert a contractor to full time, and what does it cost?

Yes. Contract-to-hire sets a conversion window and a pre-agreed fee at the start, so converting is a business decision rather than a negotiation. The fee is agreed per engagement; ask for it with your brief.

What if the placement does not work out?

If the fit is wrong we say so first and replace the engineer rather than defend the placement. Replacement terms are agreed per engagement, so ask for them with your brief.

Do you also deliver cloud consulting or support?

Not through Conntal. We place individual engineers into your team on contract, contract-to-hire or direct hire. If you want a project delivered or the platform supported as a service, Ace8 does that directly at ace8.io.
