Hire IBM MQ administrators and developers
Conntal places IBM MQ administrators and developers for support and migration work. Every candidate is screened by an AceMQ practitioner on a real channel security incident covering CHLAUTH and TLS, and migration candidates on the move to RabbitMQ or Kafka. Contract, contract-to-hire or direct.
Indicative rate: from $80/hr nearshore or offshore and $120/hr onshore. See what moves it.

Migration staffing
An IBM MQ to RabbitMQ or Kafka contractor has to cover five things
A migration contractor needs more than both products on a CV. This is the checklist our screen uses for migration roles.
| Skill | What a senior contractor does |
|---|---|
| Inventory the estate | Lists the queue managers, channels, clusters and the applications behind each queue, including the ones nobody owns. |
| Map the delivery semantics | Says what persistent, transactional and ordered delivery on IBM MQ become on RabbitMQ (acknowledgements, publisher confirms, quorum queues) or Kafka (partitions, offsets, idempotent producers), and where the guarantee changes. |
| Carry the security over | Rebuilds CHLAUTH, TLS and CipherSpec controls as the target's listener, TLS and permission model, and does not assume they come across. |
| Plan cutover and rollback | Runs both platforms in parallel with a defined rollback, and can say when the last IBM MQ consumer is gone. |
| Know what should stay | Spots flows that depend on features such as XA transactions, which neither RabbitMQ nor Kafka offers, and says they should stay on IBM MQ. |
A screening checklist, not a project plan. Scope and sequence depend on the estate.
Rates
What a contract IBM MQ engineer costs
Senior contract IBM MQ engineer rates start at $80/hr nearshore or offshore and $120/hr onshore. These are indicative from-rates, last reviewed 31 October 2026.
| Location model | From (USD per hour) | Where engineers are based |
|---|---|---|
| OnshoreHighest rate | $120/hr | US-based, on client time zones, cleared where the engagement requires it. |
| NearshoreOur default recommendation | $80/hr | Latin America and Canada, four hours or less of overlap loss, same working day. |
| OffshoreLowest rate | $80/hr | Europe, India and South East Asia. |
What moves the number
- Platform scarcity. The fewer engineers who have run IBM MQ in production, the higher the rate.
- Seniority. The figures are for senior engineers; staff and principal levels cost more.
- Clearance and residency. Cleared or on-site work narrows the pool and sits in the onshore column.
- Term. Length, hours and the engagement model change the rate; contract-to-hire and direct placement are priced differently.
Indicative from-rates for senior contract engineers, USD per hour. The final rate depends on platform scarcity, seniority, clearance and term.
The screen
How we vet IBM MQ engineers: the published screen
Every IBM MQ engineer is screened on the scenario below by the Messaging practice lead at AceMQ. The senior and mid answers are published so you can judge our bar before you engage us, and candidates know what they are walking into.

Conntal Vetting Standard
Scenario put to the candidate
After a security review your team enables channel authentication on a production queue manager. The next morning a partner's sender channel is refused, and the partner says nothing changed on their side. What do you check, and what do you avoid doing?
Vetted by
Messaging practice lead · AceMQ
A senior answer contains
- Reads the queue manager error log and finds which CHLAUTH rule matched before changing any rule.
- Tests the partner's address and asserted user ID against the rules with DISPLAY CHLAUTH and the RUNCHECK option, instead of guessing which rule applies.
- Knows CHLAUTH applies when a channel is created for an inbound connection and not when it is started locally, so which end started the channel matters.
- Checks the TLS side as well, certificate expiry and CipherSpec agreement, and fixes it with a narrowly scoped rule and a change record, not by switching CHLAUTH off.
Where a mid answer stops
- Disables channel authentication for the whole queue manager to get traffic moving again.
- Adds a blanket allow rule for the partner's network range.
- Assumes the partner's firewall is at fault without reading the error log.

Engagement
Ways to hire IBM MQ engineers
Platform work usually starts with a defined piece of change and becomes ongoing ownership, which is why most IBM MQ engineers engagements begin on contract. All three models are available, in any location model.
Contract
A vetted engineer embedded in your team for a defined term.
Hourly, billed against an approved SOW. Most common for migrations, upgrades and capacity surges where the work has an end date.
Contract staffingContract-to-hire
Work together first, convert when it is obviously working.
A defined conversion window and a pre-agreed fee, so the decision to hire is a business decision rather than a negotiation.
Contract-to-hire staffingDirect placement
A permanent hire, screened to the same standard.
One-time fee against first-year base. Used where the role is a long-term platform owner rather than project capacity.
Direct placement staffingNot a fit if
When to look elsewhere for IBM MQ engineers
We are the wrong choice if any of these describe your role, and we would rather say so on the first call.
- You want IBM MQ supported around the clock rather than a person placed; AceMQ provides IBM MQ support directly.
- Your broker is ActiveMQ, TIBCO or another service bus; the middleware engineers page covers those.
- You need an entry-level hire; the screen assumes a candidate has handled a channel incident in production.

Scope
A practitioner scopes the role
An engineer who runs this technology reads your brief and tells you what is missing from it. Most briefs we receive ask for the wrong seniority or the wrong title. - 02

We screen, then shortlist
Sourcing is ours; the technical decision belongs to the vetting practitioner. You only see candidates who passed the scenario on this page. - 03

FAQ
IBM MQ engineers: what buyers ask
Something not covered here? Send the requirement and a practitioner answers it, not a sales queue.
How much does a contract IBM MQ engineer cost per hour?
Indicative senior contract from-rates are $80/hr nearshore or offshore and $120/hr onshore (USD, reviewed 31 October 2026). The final rate depends on platform scarcity, seniority, clearance and term. Contract-to-hire and direct placement are priced differently, and the delivery models page sets out how.
How fast can a IBM MQ engineer start?
We do not promise a start date before we have seen the brief. A practitioner reads it, usually within one business day, and tells you whether we can staff it. Timing after that depends on the stack, the seniority and the location model.
Where can I find an IBM MQ contractor?
Conntal places IBM MQ administrators and developers on contract, contract-to-hire or direct hire. Send a role brief with the queue manager version, the platform it runs on, and whether the work is support or migration, and an AceMQ practitioner will tell you whether we can staff it.
Can you staff an IBM MQ to RabbitMQ or Kafka migration?
Yes. AceMQ runs these migrations directly, and candidates are screened on the migration path using the checklist on this page.
Do you staff WebSphere MQ and MQSeries estates?
Yes. IBM MQ was formerly WebSphere MQ and, before that, MQSeries, so it is the same lineage and the same screen. Tell us the version you run.
Why are IBM MQ engineers hard to hire?
The platform runs for decades in banks, insurers and government, while fewer engineers start their careers on it. That makes experienced IBM MQ engineers scarce, and screening for real channel and cluster experience important.
Who runs the technical screen for IBM MQ engineers?
The screen is owned by the Messaging practice lead at AceMQ. It is a production scenario, and the senior and mid answers are published on this page so you can judge the bar before you engage us.
Can we convert a contractor to full time, and what does it cost?
Yes. Contract-to-hire sets a conversion window and a pre-agreed fee at the start, so converting is a business decision rather than a negotiation. The fee is agreed per engagement; ask for it with your brief.
What if the placement does not work out?
If the fit is wrong we say so first and replace the engineer rather than defend the placement. Replacement terms are agreed per engagement, so ask for them with your brief.
Do you also deliver IBM MQ consulting or support?
Not through Conntal. We place individual engineers into your team on contract, contract-to-hire or direct hire. If you want a project delivered or the platform supported as a service, AceMQ does that directly at acemq.com.
