Toptal alternatives for senior infrastructure and platform engineers

Comparison9 min read

The short answer

The right Toptal alternative depends on who screens. KORE1 and Conntal screen with senior engineers; Arc, Proxify and Lemon.io are marketplaces with published or lower rates; BairesDev is a large nearshore firm and Insight Global a generalist. We compared nine options on four criteria from their own pages, read on 31 October 2026.

Hiring for this? See how we vet DevOps engineers

Toptal is the default name in this category, and for many roles it is a reasonable answer. The reasons to look elsewhere for senior infrastructure and platform work are specific: you want to know who assesses a Kubernetes or Kafka engineer before you pay, you want a rate you can plan with, or you want a different commitment than a marketplace offers. This page compares the main alternatives on exactly those points, and includes Conntal, which is also the author. Treat that as a disclosure, and check our entry against the others.

How we compared

We used four criteria, chosen because they are the ones that decide whether a senior infrastructure hire works: who screens, whether the provider covers niche platforms, whether rates are published, and what commitment it asks for. For each provider we read its own pages on 31 October 2026 and recorded what it states. We did not run mystery-shopper calls, use paid reviews or rely on other comparison blogs.

  • Who screens: the steps and the people the provider says assess a candidate, in its own words.
  • Niche coverage: whether a page exists for Kafka, Kubernetes, MuleSoft, ServiceNow, DevOps or similar platforms.
  • Rates published: a number on the page, with the provider's own caveat about what it means.
  • Commitment: minimum engagement, trial, guarantee and fees, if stated.

Where a page did not state something, the entry says “not stated”. That is a gap in what is published, not evidence that the provider lacks it. Conntal is included on the same criteria and is the author of this page, so the claim to check is ours.

The nine options

Toptal: the reference point

Toptal states that roughly 3 percent of applicants pass its screening and publishes the funnel on its DevOps page: language and personality evaluation, an in-depth skill review, a live screening, and a test project of one to three weeks [1][2]. It offers a trial of up to two weeks with no charge if you are not satisfied, and says the average match takes under 24 hours [1][2]. It does not publish its own rates.

Where it is strong: the most documented screening funnel of any marketplace here, and a no-charge trial. Where it may not fit: the price is only available after a call, and the funnel assesses engineers generally; the DevOps page describes no platform-specific assessment.

Arc

Arc runs a manual profile review, a video self-introduction, a technical interview or pair-programming session and a final review for freelancers [3]. It advertises “$0 until you hire” and shows freelance rates of $15 to $110+ an hour, with $60 to $100+ on its Kafka, Kubernetes and MuleSoft skill pages [3][4]. It says it can help you hire in as little as 14 days. Its headline claims the top 2% but the page does not explain how that is measured.

Where it is strong: published rates, self-serve profiles and skill pages for the platforms in this comparison. Where it may not fit: you assess the platform depth yourself, and the identical rate wording across skill pages suggests a marketplace-wide range rather than a platform price.

BairesDev

BairesDev says it accepts the top 1 percent of the 2.2 million candidates it evaluates each year, and promises bilingual nearshore Kafka developers within two weeks [5]. Its sample profiles are in Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Peru. It publishes no rates.

Where it is strong: nearshore scale and a Kafka-specific page, which suits building a larger team. Where it may not fit: no rate, trial or minimum is stated, and the screening steps are not described.

Gun.io

Gun.io describes a high-precision shortlist of vetted developers matched to your stack and delivery goals, with talent across several regions and payroll in 100+ countries [6]. The page we read states no acceptance rate, screening steps, price or trial.

Where it is strong: contracts, onboarding and payroll are handled for you. Where it may not fit: there is little published to compare, so you will need to ask for the vetting steps and rates directly.

Insight Global

Insight Global is a large generalist: its homepage lists staffing solutions, direct placement, executive search and recruitment process outsourcing across all industries, with IT as one area [7]. It states no rates, screening steps or candidate pool size on that page.

Where it is strong: breadth, if you are hiring across many functions at once. Where it may not fit: for one scarce platform engineer, a generalist screen is the thing a niche firm exists to improve on, and nothing on the page we read describes a platform-specific one.

KORE1

KORE1 is the closest in model to Conntal. It says a senior engineer on its technical panel screens every Kafka candidate before submission, with a live broker-troubleshooting session for platform engineers and a live debugging screen for streaming candidates, and that it verifies Confluent certifications directly [8]. It states an average IT time-to-submit of 17 days, contract terms of 3 to 12 months, contract-to-hire of 3 to 6 months, and a 92 percent 12-month retention figure, which is its own claim. It prints $110 to $160 an hour for senior Kafka contract work [8].

Where it is strong: a real, described technical screen, platform-specific pages, a published rate range and a track record it is willing to quantify. Where it may not fit: it is headquartered in California and recruits nationally, and we found no nearshore or offshore model on the page, and no replacement guarantee is stated there. If you need US-based onshore Kafka, MuleSoft or ServiceNow talent, it is a serious option.

Lemon.io

Lemon.io states a 1.2 percent acceptance rate and a matching time of about 24 hours, sourcing from Europe, Latin America, the US and Canada [9]. Its page sets a minimum project size of 160 hours, which it describes as one month full time or two months part time. Rates are behind a calculator.

Where it is strong: fast matching and a clear minimum. Where it may not fit: the screen is not described step by step on the page we read, and we did not find platform-specific pages for the infrastructure stack.

Proxify

Proxify says around 1 percent of applicants join its network, that 94 percent of introduced candidates are successfully matched, and that it can present a Kafka developer within a week [10]. It offers a one-week risk-free trial and states an average of $33.90 an hour on its flexible pricing plan.

Where it is strong: a trial, a published price and a Kafka-specific page. Where it may not fit: a single average cannot describe the rate for a senior onshore infrastructure engineer, and the assessment is described only as extensive.

Conntal

Conntal is the staffing arm of Ace8 and AceMQ and operates alongside Duczer East. Candidates are screened in a live session of about an hour on a production scenario by a practitioner from one of those practices who runs the platform for clients, and the scenario and the senior-versus-mid answer are published on each role page before you engage. There is no take-home. Indicative from-rates for senior contract engineers are $80 an hour nearshore or offshore and $120 onshore, set by scarcity, seniority, clearance and term.

Where it is strong: a screen you can read in advance, run by people who operate these platforms, on messaging, streaming, Kubernetes, Cloudera, WSO2, MuleSoft and ServiceNow ITOM. Where it may not fit: it is a new firm, so it publishes no placement statistics, acceptance rate, time-to-start, trial or minimum, and has no marketplace of browsable profiles. Its ServiceNow practice is ITOM, not general ITSM.

Where Conntal is not the right pick

What we left out

We excluded Turing: its developer-hiring page, read on 31 October 2026, leads with AI training data and an expert network, and we could not find a current staffing offer to compare on the same criteria. We did not compare on client reviews, because review sites are not a consistent way to assess infrastructure depth, and we did not repeat acceptance-rate figures from other blogs. Check the sources below for yourself; vendor pages change.

Related questions

What is the best alternative to Toptal for infrastructure engineers?

It depends on who you want screening. KORE1 and Conntal use senior engineers or practitioners to screen platform candidates. Arc, Proxify and Lemon.io are marketplaces with published or lower rates. BairesDev suits a larger nearshore team. We compared nine options on the same four criteria, from each provider's own pages.

Does Toptal publish its rates?

Not its own. Its DevOps page shows Glassdoor-based average hourly rates by country, labelled as not Toptal prices, and tells you to book a call for actual cost. Its FAQ describes a trial of up to two weeks with no charge if you are not satisfied.

How does Arc compare with Toptal and a staffing agency for senior engineers?

Arc publishes freelance rates ($60 to $100+ an hour on its skill pages) and charges nothing until you hire, but you assess platform depth yourself. Toptal documents a longer funnel and a trial but no rate. A niche staffing agency such as KORE1 or Conntal screens with platform engineers and quotes against your brief.

Is this list independent?

No. Conntal is the author and is included on the same criteria as the others. Every other entry is taken from the provider's own pages, read on 31 October 2026, and labelled as vendor-published. Where a page did not state a fact we say so rather than guess.
