The short answer
In the six months to 30 October 2026, UK contract ads quoting a day rate had a median of £550 for Kafka, £538 for Kubernetes, £513 for ServiceNow and £500 for MuleSoft and RabbitMQ. US vendor pages show $110 to $160 an hour for senior Kafka. Conntal's indicative from-rates are $80 nearshore or offshore and $120 onshore.
Hiring for this? See how Conntal handles contract staffing
Ask what a contract Kafka engineer costs and the answers come from a handful of pages: one UK data set, and a few staffing firms that print a number. This page puts those side by side for six niche platforms, shows how each figure was produced, and says plainly where no published figure exists. Everything third-party was read on 31 October 2026 and is cited to the page it came from.
Headline: UK day rates cluster within 5 percent of the all-roles median
The UK contract market is the only place with a large, regularly updated set of quoted rates for these platforms. In the six months to 30 October 2026, the median day rate across all contract IT roles was £525 [7]. Kafka was £550 [1], Kubernetes £538 [2], ServiceNow £513 [3], and MuleSoft and RabbitMQ £500 each [4][5]. Every one of them sits within about 5 percent of the all-roles median.
That is what the ads say. Why is a matter of interpretation: advertised rates are capped by the budget the client wrote down, so they compress differences that show up elsewhere, in how long a role stays open and in how few candidates clear a real screen. We have no data on time-to-fill to test that, so treat it as a reading, not a finding.
Rate table: UK contract day rates by platform
| Platform | Median day rate | 10th to 90th percentile | Day rates quoted | Per hour, 8-hour day (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apache Kafka [1] | £550 | £375 to £756 | 751 | about £69 |
| Kubernetes [2] | £538 | £400 to £713 | 2,074 | about £67 |
| ServiceNow [3] | £513 | £213 to £706 | 1,280 | about £64 |
| MuleSoft [4] | £500 | £349 to £688 | 171 | about £63 |
| RabbitMQ [5] | £500 | £406 to £690 | 139 | about £63 |
| IBM / WebSphere MQ [6] | £506 | £329 to £563 | 4 (too few to rely on) | about £63 |
| All contract IT roles [7] | £525 | not shown | not shown | about £66 |
US ranges: only vendors publish them, and they disagree
There is no US equivalent of the UK data set. What exists is what staffing firms and marketplaces choose to print, and those numbers measure different things. Treat each as that publisher's claim, not a market benchmark.
| Source and scope | Published figure | As of |
|---|---|---|
| KORE1, senior Kafka contract work [8] | $110 to $160 an hour | Page updated 1 Jul 2026 |
| KORE1, ServiceNow developers, by level [9] | Mid-level ITSM $75 to $100; senior $100 to $130; integration engineer $90 to $120; solution architect or CTA $125 to $175 an hour | April 2026 data; page updated 29 Jul 2026 |
| Arc, freelance developers, Kafka, Kubernetes and MuleSoft skill pages [10][11][12] | $60 to $100+ an hour (the same wording on all three pages) | Page titled Oct 2026; rate not separately dated |
| Proxify, Kafka developers, flexible pricing plan [13] | $33.90 an hour on average | Retrieved 31 Oct 2026 |
| Toptal DevOps page, Glassdoor-based US average [14] | $66 an hour (the page says these are not Toptal prices) | Retrieved 31 Oct 2026 |
| BLS median annual wage, software developers [15] | $135,980, about $65 an hour at 2,080 hours (our arithmetic), before benefits | May 2025 |
| Conntal, senior contract, indicative from-rates | $80 an hour nearshore, $80 offshore, $120 onshore | Reviewed 31 Oct 2026 |
The gap between a $33.90 average and a $110 to $160 senior range is not a price difference you can bank on. The pages do not say how their numbers are built: a blended average across seniority and geography is a different quantity from a senior US contract rate. The Arc range is identical on three different skill pages, so it describes the marketplace rather than any one platform.
What we could not find, and left out
- US MuleSoft, Kubernetes, RabbitMQ and IBM MQ contract rates. No publisher we could read gives an hourly contract figure. KORE1's MuleSoft page gives salary ranges only, and its Kubernetes page gives no pay figures [16][17].
- ServiceNow ITOM, Discovery and Service Mapping. KORE1's table prices ITSM and integration roles but states no figure for ITOM or Discovery. Do not read the ITSM rows as ITOM rates.
- Job-posting ranges. US job ads list pay ranges, but many are aggregator estimates rather than agreed rates, and they expire. We did not average them.
- Conntal placement rates. We publish no placement statistics yet, so nothing here is derived from our own engagements.
What moves a rate
Three published adjustments are worth knowing, all from the same vendor. KORE1 says Kafka rates vary with stack, on-call expectations and clearance [8]. On ServiceNow it says contract rates run 20 to 35 percent above annualised base salary, that Now Assist and agentic AI experience adds a 15 to 20 percent premium, and that New York and California roles run 8 to 12 percent higher [9].
From our side, the factors are the ones set out on the delivery models page: whether the engineer leads the change or executes it, how few people have run the platform in production, and constraints such as clearance, US-person requirements or data residency. The location model changes the rate. It does not change the screen.
How to use this in a budget
- 01Pick the floor from the model, not the platform. Conntal's from-rates are $80 an hour nearshore or offshore and $120 onshore for senior contract engineers; scarcity, clearance and term move the final number up from there.
- 02Do the hours. One engineer for 26 weeks at 40 hours is 1,040 hours, so $83,200 at an $80 from-rate before any scarcity premium. That is arithmetic, not a quote.
- 03Compare against the loaded cost of an employee, not the salary. The cost guide on this site works through it with BLS data.
- 04Use the UK table only for relative position, such as whether a platform is above or below the market median. Do not read pounds as dollars.
- 05Get the real number from a role brief. A rate for your role, stack and constraints beats any range on this page, ours included.
Method
- UK data: ITJobsWatch contract pages for each skill, which report rates quoted in UK contract job ads that cite the skill, for the six months to 30 October 2026. We recorded the median, the 10th and 90th percentiles and the count of day rates quoted.
- Limits of that data: an ad can cite several skills, so a rate is not exclusive to one platform. Ads quote budgets, not final agreed rates. The market is the UK, in sterling, and includes London.
- US data: only figures a publisher prints on its own page, read on 31 October 2026, with the page's own date where it gives one.
- Small samples flagged: MQ has 4 quoted day rates, so its percentiles are shown but should not be relied on.
- Not used: Reddit or forum anecdotes, paid salary databases we could not open, and any figure we could not trace to a page.
- Conflict of interest: Conntal sells contract engineers. Our own from-rates are shown separately from the market data for that reason.

How much does a contract Kafka engineer cost per hour?
KORE1 publishes $110 to $160 an hour for senior Kafka contract work in the US (page updated July 2026). UK contract ads put the median Kafka day rate at £550 in the six months to 30 October 2026, which is about £69 an hour on an eight-hour day. Conntal's indicative from-rates for senior contract engineers are $80 an hour nearshore or offshore and $120 onshore.
How much does a MuleSoft developer cost per hour?
We found no US hourly contract figure published by a staffing firm we could verify. UK contract ads put the median MuleSoft day rate at £500 from 171 quoted rates in the six months to 30 October 2026. Arc prints $60 to $100+ an hour for its freelance developers, with the same wording on every skill page.
What does a ServiceNow contractor cost?
KORE1 publishes $75 to $100 an hour for mid-level ITSM developers and $100 to $130 for senior ones (April 2026 data). It gives no figure for ITOM, Discovery or Service Mapping, so those rows should not be read as ITOM rates. UK ServiceNow contract ads have a median day rate of £513.
Why use UK data for a US decision?
Because it is the only large, regularly updated set of quoted contract rates for these platforms. We use it for relative position against the market median, not as a dollar forecast. US figures come only from what vendors print on their own pages, and those are labelled as vendor-published.
